National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month

May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month, a time to focus on bone health and what we can do today to protect our strength tomorrow. Osteoporosis is often called the silent disease because most people don’t know they have it until a fracture happens. But with the right awareness, we can take steps now to prevent it, and that matters more than ever.

Osteoporosis causes bones to weaken and become fragile, increasing the risk of fractures, especially in the hips, spine, and wrists. While it’s more common in women over 50, the process often begins earlier. Bone mass reaches its peak around age 30, which means prevention needs to start long before signs of bone loss appear.

Supporting bone health starts with everyday habits. Getting enough calcium and vitamin D through a balanced diet and safe sun exposure helps strengthen bones. Physical activity is also essential. Movement that challenges your body, like walking, yoga, or strength training, encourages your bones to stay strong and resilient.

It’s also important to be mindful of what can harm bone health. Smoking, heavy alcohol use, and some medications can speed up bone loss. If you have a family history of osteoporosis or other risk factors, talk to your doctor about screenings or steps you can take to reduce your risk.

More than anything, taking care of your bones is an act of self-respect. It allows you to stay active, independent, and connected to the life you love. Whether you’re in your 20s or your 60s, it’s never too early or too late to invest in your future strength.

This month, take one simple step. Move more, eat intentionally, or schedule a check-in with your provider. Your bones are your foundation. Let’s treat them like it.
